A Mom’s Guide to the Perfect Family’s Newborn Photoshoot

A warm welcome to you fellow mommy and congratulations on your new baby!

Salute to all the new moms navigating the sleepless nights, mastering the art of breastfeeding, juggling diaper changes, and swaddling, yet still finding the energy to snap those precious newborn family photos.

Why? Because these early weeks with our little ones are fleeting, and in the blink of an eye, they’ll outgrow this adorable stage.

I still vividly recall cradling my tiny, fragile little boy just a few days old—small enough to fit in the palm of my hand. Oh, how I miss those days.

I understand how hectic life can be and the precious little time you have, which is why I’ve put together this article.

It serves as a handy checklist to guide you on what to prepare for your family’s newborn photoshoot.

Choosing the right photographer for your family's newborn photoshoot

If photography isn’t your forte, don’t worry—hire a professional. Seek out a skilled professional newborn photographer or a family photographer with expertise in capturing these precious moments.

Consider these simple tips when picking the right one:

  1. Photographer’s Style: Just like any artist, photographers have their own unique vibes. Check out their work to see if it clicks with your taste.

  2. Personality Check: Check out their blog if they have one; you can get a feel for their personality through their writing. Or, better yet, if you love their photos, drop them a message. A photographer’s vibe can turn your session into a joyous memory or a bit of a downer.

  3. Experience Matters: They don’t need a decade of experience under their belt, but experience matters. It guides how they position and pose your little one, so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

  4. Budget-Friendly Clicks: You don’t need to break the piggy bank for those newborn shoots. Find a photographer whose rates feel right for your pocket. Quality clicks don’t always come with a hefty price tag!

Preparing for the Big Day

You’ve got your photographer or decided to take on the DIY route—now let’s dive into getting everything ready for that special day.

Pick Your Spot:  First up, decide where the magic will unfold. Will it be in the comfort of your own home, known as a lifestyle newborn session, or are you opting for a studio setting? If you opt for your own home, pick a great spot, your favorite place in your house, with the best natural light. Think living rooms or the baby’s nursery—it’s where the heart is.

Work Around Nap Time:  Babies love their beauty sleep, especially in those first weeks. Tune in to your baby’s schedule; it’s like having a little director on set. The golden rule here is, let the shoot happen when baby says it’s time. The best time is the baby’s time. Happy baby, happy photos.

Crafting a Personalized Theme:  Themes can be as simple as a warm hug or as fancy as a fairy tale.  You can choose a theme that reflects your family’s interests and hobbies.  Look around for family heirlooms.  Explore your home for treasures and props that tell your unique story.

Selecting Outfits: Coordinating Cute and Comfortable:  Aim for a harmonious color palette for your family’s outfits. Matching doesn’t have to be exact, but a coordinated color scheme adds a polished touch to the visual storytelling.  Choose fabrics and styles that are comfortable for your baby’s delicate skin.  This ensures your baby stays content throughout the photoshoot.

Including Siblings and and Furry Friends

Some of the sweetest family photos I’ve come across are the ones where older kids are just beaming with joy, cradling their little siblings in their arms.

Get big brother and sister in on the action—encourage them to snuggle up with their little sis or baby bro.

Let the camera capture those moments where older siblings lend a helping hand during tummy time or wrap a protective arm around the newest family member, these gestures mark the start of a beautiful sibling bond.

Speaking of the whole family, why not include your furry pals in the photoshoot too? Your pets are part of the crew, and their playful energy or serene presence can add an extra layer of love to your family album.

Poses for your family's newborn photoshoot

This is where having a professional photographer really shines. After checking out their portfolio, you pretty much have an idea of the poses they’ll guide you through—why you hired them in the first place. If you’ve got specific requests, don’t hold back—let them know.

For our family photoshoots, I create a Pinterest board, pinning ideas to share. It’s like a little visual wishlist.

Now, a little tip: don’t stress about getting the perfect shots. The magic happens in those casual, unplanned moments—the natural bonding that makes your family uniquely yours.

And here’s a good idea: if you have a friend who can capture the behind-the-scenes action of your Newborn Photoshoot—chaos and candid moments included—that’s pure gold.

Photos are fantastic, no doubt, but there’s something about videos that tugs at the heart. I’ve found myself leaning towards videos lately.

You get to hear their laughter, witness their antics, and see those priceless expressions. It’s like freezing a piece of time that you can replay whenever you want.

Editing and Sharing

Choose photos that capture genuine moments.

Find those moments with expressions, gestures, and interactions that show the love and connection in your family.

When you’re putting together your album, mix it up with both candid shots – the ones that catch emotions on the fly, and a few posed ones for that touch of elegance and order.

When there’s a bunch of family in a shot, make sure everyone’s in the moment, showing their real selves.

Hunt for those images where the family vibe is just right, where everyone’s in sync, creating a warm and lovely atmosphere.

When you’re tweaking those photos, go for soft and natural tones. Steer clear of super bold filters or colors that pop too much—they might steal the spotlight from the real beauty of the moments you’ve captured.

Final Thoughts on your family's newborn photoshoot

Hey Mom, as we wrap up this journey through newborn photoshoots and family moments, here’s a little reminder.

While our tiny tot is the star of the show, don’t shy away from the camera; instead, step into the frame.

It’s easy to forget that, just like it’s baby’s first time into the world, it’s our new chapter, a new life as moms too.

Sure, we might still be carrying a bit of baby weight, and those under-eye circles might be on display, but our real beauty?

It’s in our eyes—the sheer happiness and love newborn babies bring into our world.

Let those newborn portraits capture not just the adorable baby, but also the overwhelming love, the joy of fresh starts, and the ties that make our family.

Here’s to a snapshot of the heartwarming journey ahead!
